On 13th May 2013, Lord Palmer, JLC Vice President Lord Fink, Baroness Neuberger, and Lord Mitchell hosted the third ever gathering of Jewish peers in the House of Lords. Following two successful Peer teas over Purim, this year’s event celebrated the festival of Shavout, with a speech to mark the festival by Baroness Neuberger.
Baroness Neuberger commented that the Shavuot tea, with its vitally important ingredient of cheesecake, was a wonderful occasion. It was a huge pleasure to see so many Jewish peers come together to celebrate, and also a great time to acknowledge the role of respect for law that Shavuot embodies, with its celebration of the giving of Torah, the law, amongst a group of lawyers and law-makers. The Jewish community can be proud of what its members have done in public life, and the coming together on Jewish festivals is something that unites peers across party differences and varying religious affiliations and none. All the peers present were immensely grateful to the JLC for organising the tea – it was a huge pleasure and privilege for us all.
Mick Davis, Chair of the Board of Trustees took the opportunity to thank the Jewish Peers for their work in the upper house and their support for many of the concerns of the UK Jewish community.
