On Thursday 23rd April, 300 people joined UJIA for an early start at the Park Lane Hotel for the Yom Ha’atzmaut Business Breakfast, with special guest speaker Baron David de Rothschild. On the same day, their first ever Big BBQ started, with members of the Jewish community throwing BBQs at home to celebrate in the way Israelis do.
In a rousing speech at the breakfast, which raised £150,000, Chairman Bill Benjamin returned to the Declaration of Independence, reminding guests of its call to action to Diaspora Jews ‘to rally round the Jews of Eretz-Israel in the tasks of immigration and upbuilding and to stand by them in the great struggle for the realization of the age-old dream – the redemption of Israel.’
A film was also screened, showing the poor state of Darca Danciger High School in Kiryat Shmona, which UJIA will be renovating, with support from the Jewish community.

About 1,000 people across London also took part in the UJIA Big BBQ, with each host having received a free gift pack to make their event special. Guests made a £10 donation which will go towards the Opening Doors appeal, to fund higher education opportunities for young people in the Galil. At least £60,000 was also raised at UJIA’s Super Sunday which will also go towards the same appeal.
