Born and educated in Dublin – firstly in a Jewish Primary school and then in a Protestant High School which at one time during my years there would not admit new Jewish pupils –this was between 1947 and 1956 which was not that long ago .
My communal involvement was inspired by my parents and my brother and sister in the 1940s. From a very early age I was a member of Jewish youth organisations, Tifferet Bachurim, Jewish Cubs , Bnei Akivah and later the Dublin Jewish
Students Union and the Inter University Jewish Federation on whose Executive I served for one year while still studying .
I spent many happy years as a student at Trinity College Dublin and was very involved in the milder forms of student political activity which were then prevalent .
On qualification as a dentist in July 1961 I went to seek work as an “economic migrant“ from Dublin to London prior to proposed Aliyah to Israel but circumstances made me move north to Manchester in Oct 1963 to practice in Oldham ,where later my main practice was for 30 years. Professionally I served on various NHS Committees representing dental interests and also organised NHS Dental Post Graduate lectures for a number of years .
I represented the Yeshurun on the Board of Deputies 1970 –1973, at have been at various times in my life the Chairman of the Manchester Talmud Torah Central Hebrew Education Board,a member of the Bury MBC Education Committee, Vice – President for 3 years and for a shorter term of office the President of the Holy Law Synagogue in Prestwich, a member of the CCJ for many years and also was Chairman of the Manchester Branch of the Jewish Historical Society of England.
For over 10 years I have been active with internet Hasbara groups – dealing especially with the media and the Irish media, having set up an Irish response group called IZAG, the Irish Internet Zionist Action Group in 2001.
I have been involved in the JRC Manchester, speaking to and canvassing prospective MPs and MEPs before each election for the past 25 years.
I have been a member of the JRC since 1970 and was one of the JRC Hon Secs in 2004 and 2005 and for the past two years have been Vice-President until elected President in May 2012.
