Closer to Israel

It was announced earlier this week that the UK Jewish and pro-Israel community will celebrate the 65th anniversary of the creation of the State of Israel with a major outdoor central London event, entitled "Closer to Israel".

Closer to Israel will comprise a street parade in Central London followed by a celebratory finale.

The decision to hold this event was taken by the heads of major communal organisations at a meeting of the Jewish Leadership Council earlier this year.

A delivery group comprising representatives of the JLC, UJIABoard of DeputiesWIZO UKCST and others will be responsible for organising the event.

The event committee will be chaired by former UJIA CEO Doug Krikler.

Chair of the JLC Board of Trustees Mick Davis said:

An outdoor central London celebration of the 65th anniversary of the creation of the State of Israel is something I believe is important for our Community. Five years ago we broke new ground as the only Diaspora community outside of North America to stage a pro-Israel street parade. Once again, on 2nd June 2013 we hope to recreate that electrifying atmosphere once again.

Event chair Doug Krikler explained that in addition to involving central communal bodies as was the case in 2008, closer to Israel would focus on encouraging participation from individual local communities. He added:

Closer to Israel will be a fantastic opportunity to show the extent to which Israel remains a central part of our collective communal identity. I urge communal organisations, synagogues, local communities, schools and youth groups to mark the date in their diaries now.

Closer to Israel will also be the over-arching brand and umbrella for a programme of year-round grass roots activities, many of which will be designed to build support for the annual event. These will be coordinated by a group led by Board of Deputies Senior Vice-President Laura Marks.

Communal organisations and synagogues who want to register to be involved in the event should contact Laura Jay on 020 7424 6447 or laura.jay@ujia.org
