JLC Announces Two New Vice-Presidents

The Jewish Leadership Council has today announced two new appointments to its Vice-Presidents Group, Gillian Merron and Michele Vogel.

Gillian Merron is a member of Liberal Judaism’s Board of National Officers and an active member of the Lincolnshire Jewish Community. An advocate and advisor for improved public health across Europe, focusing on tackling obesity and improving children's health, Gillian is also Chair of a national transport consumer body. As an involved volunteer, Gillian is a dresser for the North London based charity Dress for Success, helping disadvantaged women to get into work, and is a Prince's Trust mentor supporting young people to overcome exclusion. As a student, Gillian was a volunteer on Kibbutz Nachshon.

Throughout her 13 years in Parliament as MP for Lincoln, Gillian served as a Minister and Senior Government Whip. Experienced at the heart of government, she held office as a Minister at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Department for International Development, Cabinet Office, Transport, and as Minister of State for Public Health. Whilst in Parliament, Gillian worked in support of the Holocaust Education Trust and Labour Friends of Israel. The first serving parliamentarian to undertake a VSO (Voluntary Services Overseas) placement, her experience in Guyana, where she worked to improve the quality of children’s education, inspired the establishment of a VSO scheme for serving MPs and Peers.

Born in Leeds, Michele Vogel graduated from Leeds University with a degree in BA (Hons) in languages, followed by a teaching diploma. She taught French and German in Leeds and London. She has been an active member of WIZO UK for over thirty years taking several positions at Head Office. Initially on the National Council she joined the Executive in 1993 as AVIV co-chairman, co-chairing the cross-communal Jewish Women’s Week Campaign for five years and then serving as National Chairman from 2002 to 2006. Her current role is National President and she works on major fundraising events and is pivotal in nurturing AVIV (younger WIZO) members. She represents WIZOUK as one of the five Co-Presidents of the European Council of WIZO Federations.

Michele has served on the Board of Management of Bushey United Synagogue as Co-Chair of the Cheder Committee and recently has been involved in the Strategic Planning for Bushey United Synagogue leading the Education Working Party. Michele previously (until mid-2012) sat on the JLC Council of Members as President of WIZO UK. During that time she participated in the JLC Communications Task Force and sat on the JLC’s Commission on Women in Jewish Leadership.

Gillian Merron said:

I am delighted and honoured to become a Vice-President of the Jewish Leadership Council. I look forward to making my contribution to further strengthening the impact and voice of organisations across the Jewish community.

Michele Vogel said:

I am delighted to accept the position of Vice-President of the JLC. The JLC plays a vital role in planning strategically for the future of our community and ensuring, together with the Board of Deputies, that the community’s voice is heard on important issues which impact on us all. As one of the few women on the JLC and as a past Chair of WIZO, the largest Jewish women’s organisation in the UK, I hope to bring my experience and values to the table and make a positive contribution.

Mick Davis, Chair of the Board of Trustees said:

I am delighted to welcome the appointment of Gillian Merron and Michele Vogel as our newest Vice-Presidents. Between them they bring a wealth of experience and activism to the table. I am sure they will make a huge impact.

ENDS

JLC Vice-Presidents are nominated by member organisations and elected by the full council on the recommendation of the Board of Trustees. They serve for a three year term of office, attend Council meetings, advise the Trustees and engage with relevant parts of the Council's work. They do not have a formal voting role in JLC Governance whereby policy is set by heads of our member organisations.
