In response to comments reportedly made by Mr Samuel Hayek, Simon Johnson, Chief Executive of the Jewish Leadership Council said:
Mr Hayek's opinion on the quality of UK Jewish leadership is a matter for him alone but distorting the truth of the interventions of the Leadership at this time is of course disgraceful and unhelpful. It is a matter of public record that the chairman of the JLC published an article in defence of Israel in the Sunday Times on 5th August and another in the Daily Telegraph on anti-Semitism on 1 September. A number of statements were issued by the JLC and the Board of Deputies during the crisis in support of Israel and in particular challenged critical comments by the Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg , the Leader of the Opposition, Ed Milliband and the Shadow Foreign Secretary , Douglas Alexander. Member organisations also issued statements from time to time. The CST and Bicom were constantly active during this period and calls for action by the Community were initiated at synagogues across the country and via adds in the main Jewish press. UJIA and our youth movements took over 1,200 young people to Israel at this time and kept them safe.
