A delegation of leaders from Jewish community organisations met with the Chief Executive of the London Marathon, Nick Bitel, to discuss the timing of the 2016 Virgin Money London Marathon. The meeting was attended by Chief Executives Simon Johnson, Jewish Leadership Council; Gillian Merron,Board of Deputies of British Jews and Paul Anticoni, World Jewish Relief and Michael Ziff, Chairman of Maccabi GB.
Mr Bitel explained the complex factors taken into account when setting the date of the Virgin Money London Marathon, such that it was unavoidable that the 2016 event should coincide with the second day of Passover in this particular year as it is the only possible date
Mr Bitel very much regretted the impact that this would have and reiterated that the Rollover system would continue to be available, so that Jewish charities which were unable to use their places could roll them forward to the 2017 London Marathon. As an alternative, other charities often wish to take the unused places, offering some benefit to Jewish charities and Mr Bitel offered to put charities in touch with the London Marathon’s official agent in Israel in case some places could be made available to Israel based runners for whom the 2nd day Passover might not be an issue.
The Jewish community appreciated the willingness of the Chief Executive of the London Marathon to meet community representatives to discuss their concerns directly and outline constructive ways forward.
