Government Officials Experience Jewish Big Society

Civil servants from five Government Departments toured the Jewish community on 09 April 2013.The purpose of the tour was to enable civil servants who deal with Jewish communal issues to see the community, to hear directly from the community and to be able to ask whatever questions they wished. The tour was highly successful and was much praised by both participants and those whom they had met.

The tour was jointly organised and staffed by CST, Jewish Leadership Council and the Board of Deputies, with the Chief Executives of all three organisations spending the day with the group. It was the third such tour, following that of November 2011.

Q & A: Hilton Lorie, Leeds Jewish Representative Council

1. What motivates you to be involved in communal life?

I’m very proud of the City of Leeds and especially so, the history of the Jewish community in Leeds. I’m also very proud of my family’s contribution to Jewish life in Leeds. On my mother’s side as a little boy I always saw a lot of hands on community work taking place and spent my school holidays contributing to this. My father ended up in Leeds before WW2 and was welcomed and helped into the community, and my parents always felt they must uphold their responsibility to do the same for others. That is what motivates me to try to make sure that Leeds continues to be a vibrant, caring Jewish community that still contributes an enormous amount to the city as a whole.

Exec's Summary: March 2013

I was delighted to speak at a dinner meeting of Jewish teachers a few weeks ago. Together with my colleague Jon Benjamin of the Board of Deputies I have been engaging with the new leadership of the Jewish Teachers Association, spearheaded by the dynamic Flora Richards for the past year. They have been successful in pushing back against the growth of hostile sentiment within the NUT, however some of the stories we heard during that dinner, including the example of a young Jewish teacher whose lessons were boycotted by pupils during the recent Operation Pillar of Defence in Gaza was a chilling reminder of how the BDS movement continues to have an impact upon the lives of ordinary British Jews – regardless of any connection to Israel.

Chair's Message: March 2013

We continue to coordinate communal efforts to press the Liberal Democrats on the antisemitic remarks of David Ward MP. Lord Ahmed’s comments blaming his own criminal activities on a Jewish conspiracy are of similar concern. We applaud the Labour Party for taking swift action but it is difficult to reconcile his continuing membership of the Party with his blatant antisemitic remarks.
