JLC Fellowship 2012-2013

The Jewish Leadership Council Fellowship is an initiative which seeks to host an outstanding leader and support them through a one-year paid fellowship at the Jewish Leadership Council.

The fellowship is for inspirational graduates who have proven they are passionate about Israel and the Jewish community. They will be interested in a career in politics, government, public policy, international relations, charities, or NGOs, and have a comprehensive knowledge around the contemporary issues affecting the Jewish community and the Middle East.

Jewish Memories of Mandela UK Launch

Last Friday (11 May), chair of the Jewish Leadership Council’s Board of Trustees Mick Davis hosted the UK launch of the book “Jewish Memories of Mandela”. The launch took place in the presence of South African High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, H. E. Dr. Zola Skweyiya.

Big Society Forum

Speaking at a meeting of the Conservative Party's 'Big Society Forum' last night, JLC Trustee Gerald Ronson CBE highlighted the need for an effective partnership between Government and the voluntary sector to deliver the 'Big Society' agenda. He also told the audience of Government Ministers and Civil Society leaders that the recent budget proposals to cap tax relief on charitable donations was a "giant step backwards" and called upon Chancellor George Osborne to present an alternative proposal. The debate around Peter Beinart’s recently published book “The Crisis of Zionism” continues to generate interest across our community.

JLC member organisation BICOM have produced an electronic symposium to help explore the issues.  The symposium includes this critical review of Beinart’s book and a response to his calls for a Zionist BDS by JLC Chief Executive Jeremy Newmark.

National Union of Teachers Motion

Following an alert from the Fair Play Campaign Group and the mobilisation of NUT members through the Jewish Teachers’ Association, it emerged today that a Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC)  inspired motion designed to demonise Israel has been dropped from the agenda for debate at the National Union of Teachers (NUT) Conference in a priority ballot.

Dinner with Leader of the Opposition

JLC Trustees and members of key committees recently met Ed Milliband. Matters discussed included Jewish schools, the growing assault upon Israel’s legitimacy, the big society, the importance of charitable giving, shechita and campus issues. One of the outcomes is that Ed has asked us to arrange some interaction with the Youth Movements.
