The London Jewish Forum (LJF) is a body dedicated to the promotion of Jewish life in London. LJF is the enabling and representative body for Jewish Londoners and between Governmental bodies, business and the voluntary sector in the capital. The Forum is seen by the Mayor’s Office and London Assembly as the voice of London Jewry.
LJF has always been keen to ensure that political figures understand the issues facing Jewish Londoners, and to allow a dialogue to be fostered across public policy areas. This enables the community and the stakeholders to engage better in the development of public policy as well as with policy makers.
With these aims and objectives in mind, LJF has launched Think Jewish London, a series of discussions with key parliamentarians and public figures on contemporary policy areas impacting upon London. Six MPs have signed up to speak at Think Jewish London events so far: Nick de Bois MP, Conservative MP for Enfield North; Lee Scott MP, Conservative MP for Ilford North; Rt Hon David Lammy MP, Labour MP for Tottenham; Gareth Thomas MP, Labour (Co-op) MP for Harrow West; Meg Hillier MP, Labour (Co-op) MP for Hackney South and Shoreditch; and Rt Hon Sadiq Khan, Shadow Minister for London and Labour MP for Tooting. To find out further details about each event please visit our website www.londonjewishforum.org.uk or contact [email protected].
LJF is also hosting a series of tours of Jewish London for London Assembly Members. These include visiting a social welfare provider, a Jewish school and a synagogue. The purpose of the tour is to help Assembly Members understand the needs of the Jewish community and how it functions. They give Assembly Members an opportunity to see the community first-hand, to hear directly from individuals and to continue to strengthen relationships between the London Assembly and the growing Jewish community in London.
To date, two tours have been hosted and attended by: Andrew Dismore AM, Barnet and Camden; Joanne McCartney AM, Enfield and Haringey; Murad Qureshi AM, Londonwide; and Navin Shah AM, Brent and Harrow; Jennette Arnold AM, North East, Hackney, Islington and Waltham Forest; Gareth Bacon AM, Londonwide; James Cleverly AM, Bexley and Bromley and Roger Evans AM, Havering and Redbridge.
The tours have been highly successful and praised by both the participants and those whom they had met.
Commenting on the tour, Jennette Arnold OBE AM said:
My tour of Jewish London, organised by the London Jewish Forum, was absolutely fantastic. It was interesting, informative and showed me places in London that I’ve never visited previously. The list of places that we visited was a great mix, which incorporated a synagogue, a school and a family centre, and gave an excellent, rounded insight into Jewish London – both in the present and the past. I commend the work of the London Jewish Forum, thank them for their extremely stimulating tour and look forward to working with them in the future in my role on the London Assembly.
