60 Days Since October 7th

It is now 60 days since the events of October 7th. Like all of us I am haunted by what we have since learnt took place that day and my thoughts are with the victims, the hostages and their families. As we navigate these challenging times, the JLC's commitment to the well-being and safety of our community has never been stronger. Over the past month, the Jewish Leadership Council has been actively engaging with key political figures and law enforcement agencies to address pressing concerns, most importantly about the rise of antisemitism and fears over community safety. These efforts are part of our ongoing mission to advocate for and protect our community.

In a time when many in our community feel that our identity as Jews feels under threat, the JLC is proud to launch the #LightWithPride campaign. This initiative is a response to recent trends where members of our community felt compelled to hide their Jewish identity. #LightWithPride is more than just a campaign; it's a call to action for each of us to celebrate our heritage openly and with pride. By lighting our Chanukiahs and sharing these moments, we stand together against intolerance, affirming our identity as a source of joy and resilience. I hope you will join me in this campaign to showcase our traditions, a move that not only strengthens our community spirit but also serves as a beacon of hope and resilience against adversity.

In line with this spirit of visibility and celebration, we are delighted to be continuing our collaboration with the iconic London landmark, the London Eye, which will be lit up for Chanukah alongside the Chanukiah in Trafalgar Square.

In a powerful display of unity and solidarity, I was honoured to stand shoulder to shoulder with fellow Jews and our allies at the recent March Against Antisemitism. This historic gathering, the largest of its kind since the Battle of Cable Street, was a resounding statement of our collective strength and determination. I was also thrilled that the JLC was able to partner with law firm White and Cast Ltd to host over 500 Jewish professionals at a significant event celebrating Jewish culture in the workplace. This gathering, a vivid demonstration of our community's commitment to sharing and embracing our culture, was a source of immense pride.

During my visit to Israel this past month, where I met with President Herzog and others, the weight of the horrors of October 7th was unmistakably present in every conversation. Witnessing the nation’s struggle was difficult, but the determination and strength I saw was a profound reminder to me of our shared values and the unbreakable spirit that defines the Jewish people.

As we move forward, let's carry this spirit of defiance and strength. Our actions and unity send a powerful message of hope and resilience, not just within our community but to the world at large.

Together, let us shine our light with pride.
