Exec's Summary: April 2013

A few days after the inaugural meeting of our new Commission on Provision for Young People, I was privileged to attend the annual Yom Ha’zikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut service led by B’nei Akiva. The evening was an exemplar of one of our youth movements at its very best. Taking a leadership role in the wider Jewish community fusing together a cocktail of ideology, passion and commitment. The keynote speech delivered by B’nei Akiva Mazkir Jonny Sherman reinforced the role that Zionist youth movements play in ensuring the vitality of our community. The work of our youth commission is at its very early stages, however it is already clear that our commissioners will need to engage in real depth with the movements that make up the ZYC. We often refer to them as the ‘leaders of tomorrow’, however in a very real sense they already play a leadership role today.

Jewish Teachers Present at NUT Conference

For the first time in many years, Jewish teachers had a formal presence at the National Union of Teachers Conference over the Easter weekend. Despite the strictures of Shabbat and Pesach, a stall run by the Jewish Teachers Association attracted many visitors who heard about the challenges faced by Jewish teachers in mainstream schools.

Lead's Adam Science Programme Cohort Hear From Community CEOs

On the 10th April, this year’s Adam Science group were privileged to hear from the CEOs of the JLC, Jewish CareNorwoodCST and UJIA. In true ‘Question Time’ style, the panel answered questions from the group on a variety of issues including how the community engages with MPs; the challenges of fundraising, and the crucial relationship between the professional and lay leadership.

Redbridge Participate In Maccabi GB Community Fun Run

The Redbridge Educational Renewal project was launched by the North East London and Essex local communities in partnership with the Jewish Leadership Council in response to the JLC’s Commission on the Future of Jewish Schools.

The Jewish Leadership Council has today announced that Maccabi GB has joined as its newest constituent member.

Maccabi GB plays a vital role within the community as the only provider of Jewish sport and educational activities in Great Britain.

We welcome Simon Jackson to the JLC Council who has recently succeeded Hilton Lorie as President of the Leeds Jewish Representative Council. Simon studied law at the University of Leeds and is a partner and Head of Commercial Property at Shulman’s LLP.

Leading In Session Two: Raising Your Profile

After the successful launch of Leading In on 20th March, we are delighted to invite you to the next Leading In session on 30th May. Leading In was created in response to the desire and need for more leadership skills training, expressed by alumni of Lead’s programmes as well as employers within the community. Lead believes that Jewish communal leaders need both a deep understanding and knowledge of the UK Jewish Community as well as a core range of leadership skills. Leading In is the new programme for leadership skills training allowing lay and professional leaders to learn, discuss and network with colleagues from across the community.
