Our Newest Members

We are delighted to welcome Rhea Wolfson (RSY) and Harry Jardine (FZY) to our council of members as representatives of the Zionist Youth Council (ZYC). Rhea Wolfson commented "If the UK Jewish community is to continue to be a forward thinking and active community we must place the utmost important on listening to the voice of the youth. For that reason it is integral that young people are represented in forums such as the JLC. Harry and I are therefore very honoured to be able to represent the young people of the Jewish community in this important forum."

Q & A: Frank Baigel, Jewish Representative Council of Greater Manchester and Region President

1. What motivates you to be involved in communal life?

I am motivated by two main aims, first of all to encourage younger people to take up responsible roles in our community leadership. Secondly, my work is driven by the fact that we must not allow creeping delegitimisation of Israel or of the Jewish people to become acceptable. Being pro-Palestinian should not automatically make you anti-Israel.

Moty Cristal in London

Last month, the JLC hosted Moty Cristal in London. He was visiting primarily for preparatory work for the legal case he is pursuing against UNISON and Manchester Mental Health Trust. Moty is a world renowned conflict resolution expert and peace activist. In May 2012, he was due to run a seminar on behalf of Manchester Mental Health Trust. On learning that Moty was Israeli, UNISON claimed that it would be a breach of Union policy to be trained by an Israeli and therefore boycotted Moty's scheduled session. The Trust subsequently cancelled Moty's booking. Moty argues that this is unlawful discrimination on the grounds of nationality. For technical legal reasons the case was being pursued in both Manchester County Court and an Employment Tribunal. However, Moty's efforts will now be concentrated in winning in the County Court.

Chair's Message: December 2012

I am particularly pleased that for the second year running, the JLC alongside the London Jewish Forum, Chabad and our members, delivered one of the largest public celebrations of Chanukah in any Diaspora community. So many of you joined us together with Mayor Boris Johnson for our Chanukah in the Square event on the third night of Chanukah. The size of the crowds who turned out in the freezing cold to celebrate is real testimony to the spirit of our community. This event encapsulates the vitality of the UK Jewish community, swathes of people of all ages, of all denominations, singing and dancing together. I am delighted that two of our Jewish schools, JCOSS and Wolfson Hillel played such a central role in the event. Anyone who doubts we are a thriving community need just take a snapshot of Trafalgar Square on 10th December. It is events and initiatives like this that highlight and reaffirm core communal priorities such as education, freedom and collective pride in our identities as British Jews.
